Lapidary artist Bruce Eckhardt creates jewelry with semi precious stones like turquoise, opals, variscite, chrysoprase, sugilite, etc. 40 years of mining and prospecting and cutting stones, Bruce has become a celebrity in the world of Southwestern jewelry with big money galleries selling his art in Denver, Jackson Hole, Sante Fe, and in cool spots on the East coast.
Bruce has lived with the Hopis and other indian tribes in Arizona, and learned their silversmithing and stone cutting techniques. All his silver bracelets are sourced from a few native American artists with whom Bruce has life-long standing relationships.
Over the last 3 years, I have had the opportunity to photograph a number of Bruce’s jewelry: bracelets, rings, necklaces and earrings. I favor natural light and a bit of staging to juxtapose the stone and silver with other elements such as velvet, metal, water, fire, vegetals and wood.
This is a small set of the photos we did together.
